Jerre Schwartz Dwarf Japanese Maple is a rare witches' broom selection discovered by Billy Schwartz and named in honor of his mother, Jerre. This amazing specimen is known for its incredibly dense, compact branching and naturally sculpted structure. In spring, finely cut leaves emerge in brilliant pink-red, creating an immediate focal point in the landscape. As temperatures warm, the foliage softens to light green, only to surprise again with a secondary flush of pink-red new growth. It's a season-long performance packed into one compact tree.

This dwarf Japanese maple is expected to reach approximately 6–8 feet tall and 4–6 feet wide over time, forming an upright, vase-like silhouette with remarkable density. Its smaller footprint makes it ideal for tight garden beds, foundation plantings, and curated focal points. The thin-lobed leaves give it a delicate, almost lace-like texture, though the plant itself is hardy and resilient once established. In fall, Jerre Schwartz Dwarf Japanese Maple finishes strong with vibrant oranges and fiery reds that glow against the crisp autumn air. Few compact trees deliver this much color movement in a single growing season.

Botanically known as Acer palmatum 'Jerre Schwartz', it adapts well to a range of garden soils provided drainage is good. It performs beautifully in morning sun and appreciates afternoon shade. Though visually refined, it is surprisingly low maintenance and moderately drought tolerant once established. If you're searching for a dwarf Japanese maple with pink spring foliage, dense structure, and brilliant fall color, Jerre Schwartz Dwarf Japanese Maple stands confidently in a class of its own.

JERRE SCHWARTZ DWARF JAPANESE MAPLE Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips

  • Recommended Soil:
    • Prefers well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
    • Slightly acidic soil (around pH 5.0–7.0) supports best foliage color.
    • Amend heavy clay to improve drainage before planting.
    • Avoid consistently wet or poorly drained sites.

  • Sun Exposure:
    • Prefers morning sun with afternoon shade.
    • Filtered light enhances foliage color without leaf scorch.
    • Too much intense afternoon sun may stress delicate leaves.

  • Irrigation Needs:
    • Water regularly during the first growing season.
    • Prefers consistently moist but not soggy soil.
    • Moderately drought tolerant once established.
    • Deep watering during prolonged heat supports foliage health.

  • Feeding & Nutrients:
    • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring.
    • Avoid high nitrogen formulas that reduce compact habit.
    • Top-dress with compost annually to maintain soil vitality.
    • Do not over-fertilize, especially in young plants.

  • Pruning & Maintenance:
    • Minimal pruning needed due to dense witches' broom structure.
    • Remove dead or crossing branches in late winter.
    • Avoid heavy shaping that disrupts natural form.
    • Mulch around the root zone to protect shallow roots.
