Buy Flame Thrower® Redbud online. Flame Thrower® Redbud is an awesome new introduction from JC Raulston Arboretum at North Carolina State University, and is now part of Sooner's Redbud selections for Spring of 2020. This cultivar is going to bloom beautiful pink flowers in early spring that is typical of the species. The true uniqueness of this tree is the followup to the blooms: burgundy-red foliage emerges that fades to shades of orange, yellow, and green as the leaves mature. This amazing display of color is going to be seen throughout the growing seasons, and is going to be an amazing standout for any collector or specimen planting in your landscape!

Family: Fabaceae · Common Name: Redbud

Redbud is a fascinating genus of small trees with several species and many varieties and cultivars. Native to the eastern and southern US, Redbuds are scattered throughout the countryside’s and are one of the first trees to flower in early spring, along with Dogwoods. Redbuds require well draining soil even to the point of being rocky. If planted in wet or poorly draining soils the trees will decline in health rather quickly. Best planted high and dry!

FREE with every plant purchased:

  1. Melody - Apr 17, 2022
    Milton, Florida (Hardiness Zone: 8)

I live in zone 8b. Pre-ordered one of these 2-19-2021. Received it on 7-2-2021 (my birthday so it was my birthday present). It was watered, then planted in the fiber container it came in on same day according to instructions and with the provided fertilizer that came with it. It was planted behind a retaining wall that contained my native, sandy soil with Black Kow composted manure, composted pine fines, and added top soil so drainage was excellent and the tree was even raised up about 1 inch above soil level. Backfill soil was pressed in and watered several times to alleviate large air pockets. This tree was then mulched with shredded pine bark mulch but kept it away from the base of the tree. A soil test had been done after the soil and amendments were placed behind retaining wall and found to be very high in nutrients. There were shrubs and perennials, including drift roses which remained very healthy and vigorous.

The tree was irrigated and had regular water when our very rainy 2021 summer failed to provide it. The tree put on some new growth throughout July and August, but in September the leaves started getting crispy, then dying and falling off. I thought it was too early for the normal fall leaf drop at the time but there were no signs of disease or insects on the tree. It was very clear by late winter that this tree was quite dead. This tree was very anticipated and great care was given to the care of it. I have no idea why it died. Whenever I find a different replacement for it and dig it up, I intend to examine the root system to see if there are any answers there. This is a recent addition to the nursery trade. It might be prudent to put off purchasing an expensive one until it has been in the market for a while. This was heartbreaking and the warranty on it is very short. I will never purchase another tree online with such a short warranty.
